Gainsborough Children's Centre

Client: The Hackney learning Trust
Contract value: £660,000
Completed: 2008

This project involves the refurbishment of an existing single storey Victorian building into a new Children’s Centre within the grounds of Gainsborough Primary School. Externally a new canopy, entrance ramp and overcladding of the front elevation on street level create a new highly visible street identity for the centre. The canopies continue as a lightweight, dynamic timber and polycarbonate structure down the side and to the rear of the centre, in contrast to the solid masonry construction of the existing building.

Internally the alterations take advantage of the quality of the existing building, including high ceilings and good quality natural light, in particular through a long central rooflight. The centre caters for a range of uses with larger multi purpose spaces as well as smaller private cellular rooms. A new landscaped external area to the rear provides a range of play spaces, with covered areas, planting beds, timber play structures and grass mounds.
