Institute of Biotechnology. Cambridge

Contract Value: £10 million
Completed: Feasibility study 1999

In 2000 the Institute of Biotechnology was planning to move from their currently restricted urban site within Cambridge city centre to West Cambridge. The buidling repsonds to their need for flexibility and more interractice spaces which promote cross-fertilisation between various teams within the building.

Our design places a double height social space in the heart of the building consisting of cafe/restaurant, public foyer and presentation space. This space provides the focus for activity withion the building, a place where public and researchers meet and which gives physical prescence and proximity to the various departments which surround it.

The external skin of the building consists of a double layer of translucent LCD panels which respond to weather conditions as part of environmental control and can also be adjusted in response to activities taking place within the building
