A22 Gallery and Residence. Laystall Street. London

Client: Mr James Birch
Contract value: £160,000
Completed: 1998

A22 Laystall Street is an exhibition gallery and residence occupying interstitial space within a dense urban block. It has been converted from a disused jewellery factory in Clerkenwell, London. Careful incisions into the existing fabric created two new double height spaces, transforming dark landlocked spaces into airy top lit voids within the block. The first of these, a public space with frontage onto the street, has been designed to be multi purpose, variously used for theatrical and musical performances, exhibitions, cinema, and banquets. The second is the main living space for the art collector. The two interconnect to allow the house to become an extension of the public exhibition spaces.
